The 2000 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program report documents environmental effects monitoring at the BHP Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, examining impacts on valued ecosystem components including caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, upland breeding birds, loons, and raptors across a 1,600 km² study area. Results indicate that current mining disturbance levels have had no measurable negative effects on most wildlife populations, though some mitigation improvements are recommended for waste management and traffic safety.
This 2000 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program report presents habitat suitability index (HSI) models and scientific hypothesis testing for caribou, grizzly bears, and other wildlife species at the Ekati Diamond Mine. The analysis documents habitat losses from incremental mine development (1997-2000) and assesses the efficacy of mitigation measures, finding that cumulative direct habitat loss was 0.4% of the study area by 2000.
This discussion paper outlines the Government of the NWT's proposed approach to protecting species at risk through legislation establishing a recovery cycle including assessment, legal listing, automatic prohibitions, recovery planning, implementation, and periodic re-assessment. The document details mechanisms for listing endangered and threatened species, protecting critical habitat, and implementing recovery strategies with input from Aboriginal governments, co-management boards, and public consultation.
This comprehensive federal assessment examines nitrogen and phosphorus sources, pathways, and environmental impacts across Canadian air, water, and soil ecosystems, concluding that anthropogenic nutrient loading has caused demonstrable ecological and human health problems including eutrophication, water contamination, and atmospheric pollution.
The 2000 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program for the Ekati Diamond Mine assessed environmental effects on valued ecosystem components including caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, upland breeding birds, loons, and raptors. The report documents that cumulative direct habitat loss remains below 1% of the study area, no wildlife mortality from vehicle/aircraft collisions occurred, and current disturbance levels have had no measurable negative effects on most wildlife populations, though improvements in waste management and traffic safety are recommended.
A comprehensive reclamation liability estimate for the Sable, Pigeon, and Beartooth pit additions and the broader Ekati Diamond Mine, detailing estimated costs across multiple liability units (camp facilities, operations, open pits, tailings cells, waste rock storage, monitoring) projected for 2001, 2005, 2010, and 2014 with confidence intervals (10th percentile, median, and 90th percentile estimates).

Correspondence between Laura Tyler (BHPB) and Violet Camsell-Blondin (WLWB), DIAND, and EcoMetrix review of 2007 AEMP. Includes 2007 AEMP draft, NWT AEMP Guidelines, Ekati Cell E fish survey work plan, blank 2008 comment table, LLCF models, Koala Watershed annual average Total Molybdenum 1994-2005 (CCME guideline = 0.073 mg/L), Nitrate Effects on Early Life Stages of Lake Trout and Lake Whitefish Special Effects Study, sediment Total Molybdenum (mg/kg) at reference sites (Nanuq Counts, Vulture, Kodiak, Leslie, Moose, Nema, Slipper Lake), and 2001 Baseline Studies Exeter / Koala Watershed mineral-claim boundary maps.
2000 Panda Waste Rock Seepage Survey for the EKATI Diamond Mine — review meeting binder, April 23 2001 at the Yellowknife Inn Garnet Room. Surveys the Beartooth-Bearclaw drainage area. Includes DFO Fish Habitat Management correspondence, the March 2001 "Review of Ekati Information on Seepage and Waste-Rock Geochemistry" finding ARD is becoming more severe and elevated sulphate (background ~20 mg/L) persists in seepage waters, conductivity-to-sulphate correlation model, and BHP correspondence (John Witteman, Scott Williams, Jim Millard) to Melody MacLeod (MVLWB) and Zabey Nevitt (IEMA).
Wolf Notes No. 5 presents findings from the NWT Wolf Project's 1997-2000 research on tundra wolves in Canada's central Arctic, focusing on wolves' preference for esker habitat for denning and their relationship with migratory barren-ground caribou. The newsletter reports on 24 active wolf dens located in June 2000, radio-collaring efforts, pup counts, and recommendations for continued monitoring to assess cumulative effects of diamond mining activities.
BHP Diamonds Inc. reports on Northern and Aboriginal employment and spending performance for the 2000 operational year of the Ekati Diamond Mine, demonstrating achievement of Socio-Economic Agreement targets with 63.6% Northern resident employment (target 62%) and 82.21% Northern spending (target 70%)
The Macleod Institute evaluated the Interim Resource Management Assistance (IRMA) Program, a four-year federal-territorial initiative (1997-2001) providing funding to Aboriginal communities in unsettled land claim areas of the western NWT to participate in resource management decision-making. The evaluation found IRMA's mandate remains relevant given ongoing land claim settlements, increased industrial activity, and legal requirements for Aboriginal consultation, though the program achieved increased engagement in regulatory processes better than capacity building, and recommended continued support with emphasis on capacity development, flexible funding formulas, and proactive baseline studies.
This 2000 reclamation research report documents BHP Diamonds' revegetation efforts at the Ekati Diamond Mine, including soil topdressing effectiveness at Fox portal, vegetation establishment in the Panda Diversion Channel, and development of a reclamation registry. After five growing seasons, organic soil topdressing proved most favorable for plant growth, while native-grass cultivars achieved highest cover (39-52%), and Arctic Pendant Grass transplants in the diversion channel showed 60-92% survival rates.
This 2000 reclamation research report documents vegetation establishment efforts at Ekati Diamond Mine, including soil topdressing effectiveness at Fox portal and riparian habitat creation in Panda Diversion Channel. The report evaluates microbial activity, plant survival rates, and natural colonization across different soil amendments and transplant methods, and describes development of a reclamation registry to track mine site restoration progress.
