A comprehensive technical presentation by BHP Diamonds Inc. and DIA MET Minerals Ltd. documenting baseline environmental conditions and predicted impacts of the NWT Diamonds Project on water resources, including hydrology, water quality, and aquatic biology in the Lac de Gras and Koala watershed areas.
BHP Diamonds Inc.'s project description report for the proposed NWT Diamonds project outlines plans to develop Canada's first diamond mine in the Lac de Gras area, approximately 300 km northeast of Yellowknife. The report details the mining of five kimberlite pipes (Panda, Misery, Koala, Fox, and Leslie) through open pit and underground mining methods, with processing operations, infrastructure, environmental baseline conditions, and anticipated impacts on aquatic, terrestrial, and socioeconomic environments.
BHP Diamonds Inc. submitted a Project Description Report for the proposed NWT Diamonds project, Canada's first diamond mine located 300 km northeast of Yellowknife, describing plans to develop five kimberlite pipes through open pit and underground mining with production from mid-1995 to mid-2021, processing 9,000-18,000 tonnes per day of ore, and addressing environmental and socioeconomic impacts including aquatic habitat loss, wildlife disturbance, and employment generation.
This is a five-part fact sheet series explaining the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, which came into force in January 1995, and the role of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency in administering the federal environmental assessment process. The document outlines the types of assessments (screening, comprehensive study, mediation, and panel review), public participation opportunities, regulatory frameworks, and participant funding for environmental reviews of federally-authorized projects.
This design report describes the engineering and environmental specifications for a 3,530-meter diversion channel connecting Panda Lake to Kodiak Lake to enable water flow and fish passage during mining operations at the Ekati Diamond Mine. The document details channel design parameters, fish habitat enhancement measures including meanders, baffles, outlet pools, and rock placement, along with erosion control and reclamation strategies.
BHP Diamonds Inc. submits comments on the Draft Guidelines for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of the proposed BHP Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, addressing proponent definition, traditional knowledge integration, land claims considerations, and cumulative effects assessment requirements.
BHP Diamonds Inc. submits comments on draft EIS guidelines for the BHP Diamond Mine project, addressing the definition of proponent, incorporation of traditional knowledge, land claims considerations, and cumulative effects analysis including power generation requirements.
Aggie Brockman testifies at the NWT Diamonds Project environmental review panel hearing, expressing concerns about the proposed Ekati mine's impacts on northern communities, indigenous rights, and environmental protection, while questioning BHP's accountability and the adequacy of the review process.
BHP Minerals Canada Ltd. submitted a comprehensive project description report for the proposed NWT Diamonds Project, a large-scale diamond mining operation located 300 km northeast of Yellowknife in the Coppermine River basin. The report details mining plans for three kimberlite pipes (Koala, Fox, and Leslie), processing methods, infrastructure development, and environmental management strategies including tailings storage in Long Lake and mitigation measures for impacts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

BHP Minerals Canada Ltd. submitted comprehensive baseline environmental study protocols to the Regional Environmental Review Committee in October 1993 for the NWT Diamonds Project located near Yellowknife. The document outlines protocols for biophysical sampling programs including climate, hydrology, water quality, aquatic ecology, fisheries, soils, permafrost, vegetation, wildlife, heritage resources, and socioeconomic studies to establish environmental baseline conditions in anticipation of potential full-scale mining development at the Koala and Fox kimberlite pipes.
This document provides comprehensive guidelines for predicting acid rock drainage (ARD) potential in northern Canadian mines, addressing the unique challenges posed by arctic climate, permafrost, and geology. It covers ARD processes, control technology, sampling methodologies, and prediction testing approaches specifically adapted for Yukon and Northwest Territories mining operations.
