2008/2009 Long Lake Containment Facility Nitrate In Situ Treatment Test, Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton, April 2010)
This report documents a two-phase nitrate in situ treatment test conducted at the Long Lake Containment Facility (LLCF) at the Ekati Diamond Mine during 2008-2009, where phosphorus fertilizer additions stimulated phytoplankton growth to reduce elevated nitrate concentrations in minewater. Phase II (2009) added 16 tonnes of monopotassium phosphate to Cell D, achieving a 19% reduction in nitrate load while maintaining containment and monitoring potential secondary effects in downstream waters.
