The 2006 Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) evaluated potential impacts of the Ekati Diamond Mine on aquatic ecosystems in the Koala and King-Cujo watersheds, detecting measurable effects on water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic communities attributable to discharge from the Long Lake Containment Facility and King Pond Settling Facility, though no significant environmental impacts were identified. All discharged water remained within compliance limits and below most Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment (CCME) guidelines for freshwater aquatic life protection.
