Effects of Instream Mining for Granular Materials on Grayling Habitat in Northern Alaska (DenBeste & McCart, 1986)
This study compared stream habitats and grayling populations in reaches affected by instream granular materials mining during Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline construction (1974-1977) with undisturbed control reaches in five northern Alaskan streams, finding that mining typically reduced habitat quality, fish size, and biomass, with effects persisting 4-9 years after disturbance, though one exceptional case showed improved juvenile grayling habitat from increased depth.
