Kodiak Lake Mercury Investigation, 2023 Annual Report Update, Ekati Diamond Mine (Arctic Canadian Diamond Company, July 2024)
This report presents a comprehensive investigation of elevated mercury concentrations in large-bodied fish (lake trout and round whitefish) from Kodiak Lake at the Ekati Diamond Mine, including desktop analysis of historical monitoring data (1997–2018) and a 2023 field study of total and methylmercury in water and sediments. Key findings indicate that higher fish mercury concentrations are strongly correlated with wetland influences, elevated primary productivity, and Kodiak Lake's larger drainage area relative to reference lakes, rather than direct mine discharge.
