Lake Bottom Sediment Quality in the Coppermine River Basin (University of Waterloo, January 2002)
This research presentation investigates lake bottom sediment quality as an environmental indicator in four lakes of the Coppermine River basin headwaters, analyzing metal concentrations, sedimentation rates, and metal enrichment to determine anthropogenic and natural sources of contamination. Findings show elevated concentrations of several metals exceeding sediment quality guidelines, with lead and mercury enrichment attributed to long-range atmospheric transport, informing sediment quality targets and recommendations for policy development to reduce anthropogenic metal release.
