Long Lake Containment Facility (LLCF) Nitrate In Situ Treatment Test, Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton, August 2011)
This report documents the 2010 Long Lake Containment Facility Nitrate In Situ Treatment Test, in which monopotassium phosphate fertilizer was applied to Cell D to stimulate phytoplankton growth and reduce nitrate concentrations. While Phase II (2009) achieved a 19% reduction in nitrate load, Phase III (2010) showed no statistically significant reduction despite residual phosphate benefits and a large early phytoplankton bloom, likely due to efficient zooplankton grazing that collapsed the bloom in late July.
