Long Lake Containment Facility (LLCF) Seasonal Water Quality Investigation 2004 to 2005, Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton, July 2007)
This report presents a comprehensive investigation of seasonal water quality changes in the Long Lake Containment Facility (LLCF) tailings facility at Ekati Diamond Mine during 2004-2005, examining unexpected increases in contaminant concentrations observed during winter 2003/04 through field sampling, historical data analysis, and water quality modelling. The study concludes that high winter concentrations result from natural processes including solute exclusion from ice formation, stratification in Cell D, and pumping operations that draw poorer-quality water from deeper layers.
