Sable Lake Fisheries Resource and Habitat Survey, Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton, April 1998)
This baseline fisheries resource and habitat survey of Sable Lake (8.9 ha), conducted in 1997 for BHP Diamonds Inc., documents water quality, fish community composition, and habitat conditions in preparation for potential future mining of a kimberlite pipe underlying the lake. The survey found the lake to be oligotrophic with 110 lake trout and 2 slimy sculpin, relatively low catch rates, boulder-dominated littoral habitat with minimal spawning areas, and a completely isolated fish community due to impassable inflow and outflow streams.
