The Susceptibility of Salmonid Fish to Poisons Under Estuarine Conditions (Herbert & Wakeford, 1964 to 1965)
Two experimental studies comparing the susceptibility of Atlantic salmon smolts and yearling rainbow trout to zinc sulphate and ammonium chloride across varying salinity levels from fresh water to full-strength sea water. Results show resistance to both poisons increases with salinity up to 30–40% sea water, with salmon smolts consistently more susceptible than trout, and tolerance differences attributable to gill permeability and osmotic effects.
