Review of Ekati Information on Seepage and Waste Rock Geochemistry (Minesite Drainage Assessment Group, March 2001)
2 April 2001Report
This geochemical review by the Minesite Drainage Assessment Group evaluates BHP and SRK's 2000 seepage survey data from the Ekati Diamond Mine, finding that acid rock drainage (ARD) is more extensive and severe than reported—affecting approximately 26-27% of seep analyses rather than only one documented seep—and is migrating through the shallow groundwater system toward Beartooth and Bearclaw Lakes. The report identifies significant gaps in the SRK classification system, contradictions in interpretations, data gaps, and equipment failures, recommending comprehensive individual seep characterization, groundwater monitoring, water treatment, and retention of qualified technical specialists to manage the serious and worsening water-quality problems.

Panda Waste Rock Storage Area, Beartooth Bearclaw Drainage, 2000 Seepage and Waste Rock Survey Report, Ekati Diamond Mine (SRK Consulting, February 2001)
1 February 2001Report
This 2000 seepage and waste rock survey report documents BHP's expanded monitoring program investigating unexpectedly low pH seepage from the Panda Waste Rock Storage Area at Ekati Diamond Mine, examining potential causes including naturally acidic precipitation, organic decomposition, waste rock breakdown, and sulphide mineral oxidation. The study found three types of seeps with varying pH levels and identified that most seeps pose low toxicity risk to aquatic organisms, though one strongly acidic seep may be affected by sulphide mineral oxidation in carbonate-depleted kimberlite.

Panda Waste Rock Storage Area, Beartooth Bearclaw Drainage, 2000 Seepage and Waste Rock Survey Report, Ekati Diamond Mine (SRK Consulting, February 2001)
1 February 2001Report
This 2000 seepage and waste rock survey report documents BHP Diamonds' investigation into acidic seepage detected from the Panda waste rock storage area at Ekati Diamond Mine, fulfilling requirements of Water Licence N7L2-1616. The expanded monitoring program tested multiple hypotheses for low pH seepage including precipitation acidity, organic decomposition, sulphide mineral oxidation, and ammonia oxidation, with results indicating that low pH is primarily due to natural acidic precipitation and plant decomposition, with one seep showing evidence of sulphide mineral oxidation but overall low toxicity risk to aquatic organisms.
