This NWT Greenhouse Gas Strategy working committee final report outlines a framework for controlling greenhouse gas emissions in the Northwest Territories in response to the Kyoto Protocol obligations. It identifies 13 early action measures and 5 measures requiring further analysis, with estimated emissions reductions and implementation costs.
EnergySpeak Issue #2 (April 2000) is a quarterly newsletter from the Arctic Energy Alliance promoting renewable energy technologies in northern Canada. The issue announces a partnership with Natural Resources Canada and features articles on wind turbines, solar air heating (SOLARWALL®), photovoltaic systems, and the Renewable Energy Deployment Initiative (REDI) funding program, along with residential and business energy-saving tips.
NWT Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy Draft Report, November 1999, prepared by Dillon Consulting Limited, Terriplan Consultants Limited, and Lawson Environmental for the Government of the Northwest Territories Resources Wildlife & Economic Development (GNWT-RWED, Yellowknife — Mr Henderson, Project 99-6765). Includes anti-idling consultation summaries with Toronto Transit Commission, GO Transit, Ontario Motor Coach Association, Greyhound Lines, OMOEE, and Ontario Ministry; City of Toronto Board of Health Report 09 (1996) Mayor's Anti-Smog Working Group; references to Environment Canada Global Climate Change Program, Ft. McPherson Residual Heat Distribution (Farrell 1997), and NWT Power Corporation Great Slave Lake DC Link Study (Cominco Engineering Services Limited).
The Arctic Energy Alliance's first newsletter (November 1999) presents the organization's mission to reduce energy costs and environmental impact in the NWT through energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption. The issue covers Y2K preparedness for power infrastructure, energy management strategies, global climate change and NWT emissions reduction initiatives, and features projects like natural gas conversion in Inuvik and community energy assessments.
BHP Diamonds Inc. 1998 Air Quality Monitoring Annual Report (Yellowknife, May 3 1999). Documents NOx/SOx emissions and lichen-based bioindication of ambient air quality (sulphur correlations, Laaksovirta & Olkkonen 1977/1979; Manninen et al. 1991), with eutrophication risks of nitrogen deposition (Wetzel 1983), and tissue metals analytical results at monitoring stations AQ-1 and AQ-6 in the Project Area (August 1998 — Lithium, Molybdenum, Nickel, Selenium, Silver, Strontium, Thallium, Titanium, Uranium, Vanadium, Zinc, Mercury). Includes detection-limit data and station maps.
BHP's 1998 Air Quality Monitoring Report for the Ekati Diamond Mine documents emissions calculations, high-volume air sampling results showing elevated TSP levels in May and July, snow survey chemistry analysis identifying mine-related metal deposition in the Koala watershed, and lichen tissue biomonitoring detecting significantly elevated trace metals near mining operations compared to control areas.
BHP's 1998 Environmental Report details the company's environmental performance and management across its global operations in minerals, petroleum, and steel, with a focus on compliance with regulations, reduction of emissions and waste, and case studies of specific environmental initiatives such as fish protection at Ekati diamond mine and ecosystem preservation in the Timor Sea.
A personal submission to the NWT Diamond Mine Environmental Assessment Panel by biologist Robert G. Bromley arguing against the Ekati Diamond Project on sustainability grounds, proposing instead a vision for the North based on wilderness preservation, community economies, and renewable resources rather than resource extraction.
Chris O'Brien's detailed submission to the BHP EARP panel opposing the Ekati Diamond Mine project on grounds that gem diamond production does not justify ecological destruction of the Barrenlands, arguing for stricter environmental assessment, ecosystem-based management conditions, and a shift toward ecologically sustainable economic development in the NWT.
Dr. Joseph Svoboda's abbreviated EIS assessment of vegetation, landscape, and ecosystem impacts of the proposed BHP diamond mining project at Lac de Gras identifies significant deficiencies in baseline studies and recommends comprehensive ecosystem-level monitoring, habitat restoration protocols, and meaningful Aboriginal participation in the evaluation process.
Charles Laird presents Ecology North's submission to the BHP Diamond Project Environmental Assessment Review Panel, advocating for rigorous cumulative impact assessment, adequate government resources for regulation, establishment of protected areas prior to development, and resolution of aboriginal land claims before project approval.
