The report describes monitoring activities, inokhok construction for caribou guidance, road safety measures, and a March 2007 workshop where 28 community members discussed mine impacts on caribou herds and shared recommendations for future mine operations.
This 2006 annual report documents BHP Billiton's Caribou and Roads Traditional Knowledge Project at the Ekati Diamond Mine, which integrates Inuit elder knowledge with wildlife monitoring to protect caribou from mine-related hazards including roads, pits, and active mining areas. The report describes monitoring visits by the Elders Advisory Group, construction and maintenance of inokhok (traditional caribou deterrent structures), temporary fencing at Beartooth Pit, road improvements, and community workshops in Kugluktuk to share findings and recommendations.
This 2006-07 annual report documents the Caribou and Roads Traditional Knowledge Project at the Ekati Diamond Mine, which integrates Inuit elder knowledge with wildlife monitoring. The report covers field visits, an Elders Advisory Group workshop in Kugluktuk in March 2007, monitoring of caribou interactions with mine infrastructure, implementation of traditional caribou deterrent fences (inokhok) and snow fences, and regional caribou herd status discussions with government biologists.
This 2006–07 annual report documents the Caribou and Roads Traditional Knowledge Project at the Ekati Diamond Mine, which integrates Inuit elder knowledge with scientific wildlife monitoring to protect caribou from mine infrastructure hazards. The report details field visits, construction of caribou deterrence structures (inokhok and snow fences), a March 2007 community workshop in Kugluktuk discussing caribou herd status and mine mitigation measures, and action plans for 2007–08.
The 2006 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) Summary Report documents BHP Billiton's tenth annual wildlife monitoring study at Ekati Diamond Mine from October 2005 to October 2006, assessing impacts on caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, breeding birds, and falcons through aerial surveys, field observations, and habitat analysis. The report finds that while 28 hectares of habitat were disturbed in 2006, mine activities show mixed effects on wildlife, with caribou showing some avoidance during post-calving migration, nine non-vehicle wildlife mortalities recorded, and improved mitigation practices reducing vehicle collisions with wildlife.
This 2005 annual report documents the Caribou and Roads Traditional Knowledge Project at the Ekati Diamond Mine, describing how an Elders Advisory Group from Kugluktuk integrates traditional Inuit knowledge with scientific monitoring to manage caribou-infrastructure conflicts. The report presents findings from an August 2005 site visit and a January 2006 workshop, including recommendations for using inokhok (traditional stone cairns) and other deterrents to guide caribou away from hazardous mine areas.
This 2005 Ekati Diamond Mine caribou and wildlife monitoring report, prepared in Inuinnactun by Rescan Environmental Consulting and community monitors from Kugluktuk, documents observations of caribou movements, habitat conditions, and environmental impacts around the mine site based on Indigenous knowledge and field surveys.
This document comprises the appendices to the 2005 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) report for the Ekati Diamond Mine, containing standard operating procedures for wildlife monitoring activities, data collection forms, and detailed survey results for caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, and birds.
This document comprises two parts: the Bathurst Caribou Management Action Plan detailing comprehensive monitoring and management strategies for the Bathurst caribou herd across the NWT and Nunavut, and draft Mine Site Reclamation Guidelines for the Northwest Territories providing guidance on closure and reclamation planning for mining operations to minimize environmental impacts.
This is the 2005 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) summary report for the Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, covering monitoring activities from October 2004 to October 2005. The report documents environmental impacts and wildlife interactions related to mine operations, including habitat loss, caribou movements and behaviour, grizzly bear incidents, and various mitigation efforts implemented by BHP Billiton.
This 2002-2004 annual report documents a pilot project integrating traditional knowledge from Aboriginal elders (Lutsel K'e and Kugluktuk communities) with scientific wildlife monitoring of caribou interactions with roads and infrastructure at the Ekati Diamond Mine in the NWT. The report presents field observations from late summer 2002-2004, documents 12 injured or lame caribou encountered (3.9% of observations), and recommends multi-pronged management approaches including traditional inokhok stone piles, road gates, and improved caribou crossing infrastructure.
Presentation on regional caribou research related to the Ekati Diamond Mine, reviewing studies showing subtle but statistically valid differences in caribou behavior near diamond mines and discussing recommendations for expanded monitoring of cumulative impacts on the Bathurst caribou herd.
This 2004 annual report presents a five-year assessment of revegetation research at the EKATI Diamond Mine's Long Lake Containment Facility, documenting soil amendment studies, species trials, and plant establishment on processed kimberlite, along with evaluation of progressive reclamation sites including airstrip esker, topsoil stockpiles, and channel stabilization efforts.
This presentation describes community-based caribou monitoring conducted by the Wildlife, Lands & Environment Department in Åutsyl K'e, Northwest Territories, combining traditional Dene knowledge with scientific research across seasonal hunts. The document details monitoring methods, discusses concerns raised by hunters and elders regarding climate change, industrial development, and tourism impacts on caribou, and outlines upcoming collaborative projects with De Beers and other organizations.
