Environmental Agreement excerpts, discussion of southward water drainage from Lac de Gras (Bob Reid Water Resources DIAND helicopter survey with Lutsel K'e elders), Dogrib caribou-fencing and resource-terminology projects (Alice Legat), Phase II baseline flora/fauna studies, fish-palatability and water-quality issue-based community approaches, regional TK Panel committee proposals, and Collaboration and Adaptive Management principles.
The Tłįcho Land Claims and Self-Government Agreement among the Tłįcho First Nation, the Government of the Northwest Territories, and the Government of Canada, establishes the Tłįcho as a self-governing Aboriginal people with defined rights to lands, resources, wildlife harvesting, and governance authority within their traditional territory and the Wek'èezhìı management area.
This final report describes a comprehensive study of the lethal and sublethal effects of total dissolved solids (TDS) on salmonid embryos and juveniles, including acute and chronic exposure bioassays across multiple species (coho, chum, king, pink, steelhead salmon, and arctic char). The research found that fertilization was the most sensitive developmental stage to TDS exposure, with significant effects observed at concentrations as low as 250 ppm, and that different salmonid species exhibited varying sensitivities to TDS.
Cumulative Effects Assessment Training Workshop, Yellowknife February 20-21 2003, prepared by Kavik-AXYS Inc. (ND 1047) for the Environmental Monitoring Advisory Board (EMAB) for the Diavik Project. Workshop agenda and materials cover Step 2 Analysis of Effects (Regional Baseline Data collection, scientifically defined analytical methods, regional databases, proponent constraints), and case-study maps showing caribou movements through Abeilles Lakes, Copperhite, Exeter, with annotations on contraial drift and grouped movements south of the Bathurst caribou range.
This is the preliminary draft land use plan for the Sahtu Settlement Area in the Northwest Territories, prepared by the Sahtu Land Use Planning Board to guide conservation, utilization, and development of land while respecting Dene and Métis rights, traditional land use, and balancing economic, social, and cultural interests of residents and all Canadians.
This report presents results of the 2002 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program at the Ekati Diamond Mine, the sixth year of monitoring, covering valued ecosystem components including caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, and birds. Key findings indicate the mine has limited effects on wildlife, with habitat being more important than mine proximity in determining caribou behaviour, and no significant declines in monitored populations despite ongoing mining expansion.
BHP Billiton's re-evaluation and refinement report proposes modifications to the Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) for 2003-2007, evaluating sampling locations, monitoring frequencies, and analytical approaches based on historical data analysis and stakeholder consultation. The report recommends adding Leslie Lake to monitoring, continuing triennial monitoring of Little Lake, retaining Vulture Lake as a reference site, and refining seasonal sampling protocols for phytoplankton and zooplankton.
This Acid/Alkaline Rock Drainage and Geochemical Characterization Plan for the Beartooth Pipe at Ekati Diamond Mine describes predictive testing, operational monitoring, and waste rock management strategies to assess potential environmental impacts from mining waste rock storage. Geochemical testing indicates that biotite granite (>99% of waste rock) has low reactivity, while biotite schist and kimberlite require segregation and encapsulation strategies to prevent acid generation and control drainage chemistry.
Tailings Management Binder 2 (2002-2008) for the Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton). Correspondence between Eric Denholm (BHPB), Sarah Baines (WLWB), Kathleen Racher (DIAND), Tony Pearse (IEMA / Agency), Jim Millard (Environmental Specialist BHP), John Witteman (Environmental Manager BHP), Violet Camsell-Blondin (WLWB Chair).
