Wildlife Monitoring Caribou
Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP), Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton, January 2001)
1 January 2001Report
The 2000 Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program report documents environmental effects monitoring at the BHP Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, examining impacts on valued ecosystem components including caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, upland breeding birds, loons, and raptors across a 1,600 km² study area. Results indicate that current mining disturbance levels have had no measurable negative effects on most wildlife populations, though some mitigation improvements are recommended for waste management and traffic safety.
