Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) Workshop Presentation (IEMA, March 2005)
17 March 2005Report
This document outlines the Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency's Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) workshop held at Ekati Diamond Mine on March 17, 2005, detailing the monitoring of caribou, grizzly bears, wolverines, wolves, and birds, and describing mitigation measures including wildlife awareness training, speed limits, and waste management practices to reduce mine impacts on wildlife.

Wolverine Abundance Indexing on the Slave Geological Province (GNWT, 2004)
19 January 2004Presentation
A presentation on a pilot study developing hair snagging and genetic analysis techniques to index wolverine abundance on the central barrens of the Slave Geological Province. The research demonstrates that hair snagging devices and DNA analysis using microsatellite markers can effectively identify individual wolverines and assess population dynamics in relation to environmental pressures including linear developments and habitat disturbance.

Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) Binder 2 (BHP Billiton, 2002 to 2009)
2002–2009Report
Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program (WEMP) Binder 2 for the Ekati Diamond Mine (BHP Billiton Diamonds — BHPB) covering 2004-2006. Includes correspondence between Brent Murphy (BHPB), David Scott, Elizabeth Fillatre, Holly Newton (BHPB), Rob Mulders, Raymond Bourget (Resources Wildlife and Economic Development / RWED), Anne Gunn (GNWT), Ernie Campbell (GNWT), Kim Poole (Rescan), and Kevin O'Reilly (IEMA). Covers Wildlife Risk Assessment for the Long Lake Containment Facility (LLCF) under exceptional land-use scenarios — predicts acceptable risks for all metals except aluminum and magnesium. Includes Human Health Risk Assessment for animals feeding in LLCF, references on Dutch agricultural grassland breeding birds and forest cover/fragmentation impacts (Riffell, Gutzwiller, Anderson; van der Zande; Fahrig).

~2001Report
Approximate date — inferred from filename
A regional environmental assessment framework developed by researchers at the University of Alberta to evaluate cumulative effects of human developments on Arctic wildlife populations using resource selection functions and population viability analysis, with application to caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, and wolverines across the central Arctic.

Drafting a New Wildlife Act, Conservation for Today and Tomorrow (GNWT, 2001)
~2001Report
Approximate date — inferred from filename
This is a Government of the Northwest Territories discussion paper on drafting a new Wildlife Act, soliciting public input on wildlife management policies including hunting licences, harvest quotas, harvesting methods, and the integration of traditional knowledge and Aboriginal rights in wildlife management decisions.

Wolverine Ecology, Distribution & Productivity in the Slave Geological Province, Final Report to the West Kitikmeot Slave Study Society (GNWT, June 2000)
30 June 2000Report
This final report documents a four-year wolverine research project (1996-1999) in the Slave Geological Province examining ecology, distribution, home range, movements, reproduction, and harvest patterns of wolverines (Gulo gulo) on the central Arctic barrens. The study captured 36 individual wolverines via radio telemetry and examined 473 harvested wolverines to assess population dynamics, productivity, and the potential impacts of mineral development on this species.
