This baseline fisheries resource and habitat survey of Sable Lake (8.9 ha), conducted in 1997 for BHP Diamonds Inc., documents water quality, fish community composition, and habitat conditions in preparation for potential future mining of a kimberlite pipe underlying the lake. The survey found the lake to be oligotrophic with 110 lake trout and 2 slimy sculpin, relatively low catch rates, boulder-dominated littoral habitat with minimal spawning areas, and a completely isolated fish community due to impassable inflow and outflow streams.

The document provides monitoring data, literature review on Arctic lake limnology, and recommendations for continued monitoring and consultation with aeration experts.
This technical overview document details BHP Diamonds' Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) for the Ekati Diamond Mine, presenting a comprehensive framework for monitoring valued ecosystem components including water quality, sediment quality, and fish/aquatic habitat across the Koala drainage basin and reference lakes. The document outlines a tiered approach to monitoring, compliance requirements, stressors of potential concern (habitat impacts, sedimentation, contamination), and decision-making procedures to ensure the project does not cause significant adverse impacts on receiving aquatic ecosystems.
This technical overview document describes the Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) framework for the BHP Diamonds Project (Ekati), detailing objectives, valued ecosystem components (VECs), stressors of potential concern (SOPCs), monitoring parameters, and a tiered implementation approach to assess project impacts on aquatic ecosystems in the Northwest Territories.
1997 Aquatic Monitoring Baseline Study appendices for Ekati Diamond Mine, containing environmental sampling location maps and comprehensive water quality and sediment chemistry data from study lakes and streams.
This 1997 aquatic monitoring baseline study for the Ekati Diamond Mine documents comprehensive sampling of lakes and streams within and outside the Koala Watershed, measuring water and sediment quality, limnological characteristics, and biological communities including primary producers, secondary producers, and fish populations. The study establishes baseline conditions prior to mine development and establishes reference sites for long-term aquatic effects monitoring.
This technical overview working document outlines the Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) for the BHP Diamonds Project (Ekati Diamond Mine), detailing the framework for monitoring aquatic environments during all project phases. The program employs a tiered approach combining water quality measurements, sediment analysis, and biological community assessment across reference and potentially impacted lakes and streams to detect project-related impacts and test environmental predictions from the EIA.
This report presents the results of the 1997 Kodiak Lake Sewage Effects Study, a three-year monitoring program initiated to examine the effects of treated sewage effluent from the Ekati Mine camp (500–1000 people) on the aquatic environment of Kodiak Lake. The study documents changes in water quality, sediment quality, primary and secondary producers, and fish populations resulting from sewage discharge that began in April 1997, with comparisons to pre-discharge baseline data from 1993–1996.
This report documents a sediment survey of Kodiak Lake conducted in August 1997 to assess sediment loading from the Panda Diversion Channel, which was constructed to maintain water connection between Panda and Kodiak lakes during mining operations at the NWT Diamonds Project. Results show that channel sediments were primarily confined to the delta at the channel mouth and shallow areas within approximately 200–600 meters of the discharge point, with thicknesses ranging from 2 to over 30 centimeters.
The Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency provides detailed comments and recommendations on BHP Billiton's 2001 Aquatics and Wildlife Effects Monitoring Programs (AEMP and WEMP) and February 2002 environmental workshops, addressing improvements in reporting, monitoring protocols, data analysis, and Aboriginal participation.
Panda Diversion Channel (PDC) Surveillance and Effects Monitoring Program (SEMP) binder for the Ekati Diamond Mine (1997-2007). Annual PDC reports from BHPB (Brent Murphy distribution 2005-2007 to Kevin O'Reilly, Agency), DIAND Water Resources comments (Francis Jackson, May 2002) on AEMP refinements and re-evaluation and aquatic baseline collection for Sable / Pigeon / Beartooth, Dillon Consulting Limited 1997 Stream Habitat Compensation Program creation/enhancement/monitoring/maintenance plans, YOY Arctic Grayling numbers per habitat-assessment site (1998-2001 at sites DCH1, DCH2, DCH4, DCH9, DCH10, DCH11, DCH15) with mean fork-length growth tracking August-September 2001, PDC and tributary habitat stability, Stabilization, Sediment Mitigation, and Sediment Management short-term plans.
Environmental baseline assessment of Bear Tooth and Bear Claw Lakes on BHP Diamonds Inc.'s Koala mineral claim, documenting bathymetry, hydrology, water chemistry, sediment composition, and aquatic fauna to support regulatory approvals for exploratory drilling. The assessment concludes that the proposed development presents little potential for significant physical and biological environmental impacts.
This 1996 environmental data report documents baseline monitoring results for meteorology, hydrology, water quality, and aquatic life in the Koala watershed at the BHP Diamonds Project (Ekati mine) in the Northwest Territories. Key findings include above-average precipitation in 1996 (particularly August), corresponding high stream flows in late summer, water quality characterized by slightly acidic low-turbidity conditions, and fish populations in monitoring lakes dominated by round whitefish and lake trout with minor disturbance signals in Kodiak Lake related to mining activities.
This report presents a comprehensive baseline water quality survey of lakes in the Slave Structural Province of the Northwest Territories, conducted during 1993-1994 using the Central Arctic Study to measure current lake water chemistry and identify impacts from mining and other developments. The study analyzed 374 lakes for physical parameters, major ions, nutrients, metals, and other contaminants, with results displayed using GIS technology to assess geographic distribution and identify anomalous areas.
