This is the final year (2011, 13th year) of monitoring the Panda Diversion Channel (PDC), a compensatory fish habitat constructed in 1997 to offset stream losses from Ekati Diamond Mine development. The report assesses the PDC's effectiveness through measurements of physical habitat (flow, temperature, water quality, culverts, enhancement structures), biological productivity (benthic invertebrates, vegetation, fish populations), and Arctic grayling use, concluding that the PDC has successfully matured and serves its purpose as defined in the 1996 Fish Habitat Compensation Agreement with Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
This report presents the 2010 Fay Bay Aquatic Monitoring Program results following an unplanned processed kimberlite (PK) release in May 2008. The monitoring data indicate recovery of both aquatic and terrestrial environments, with vegetation re-establishing and water quality parameters returning toward baseline conditions, though some chemical effects remain three years after the incident.
BHP Billiton's 2010 Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program summary report presents results from 13 consecutive years of monitoring in the Koala Watershed and 10 years in the King-Cujo Watershed at Ekati Diamond Mine. The report documents water quality changes, biological effects, and four specialized studies, finding mine-related impacts on phytoplankton diversity and nitrogen concentrations in lakes downstream of the Long Lake Containment Facility.
This 2010 Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program report evaluates long-term trends and mine-related effects on aquatic ecosystems in the Koala and King-Cujo watersheds at EKATI Diamond Mine, including analysis of water quality, physical limnology, and biological communities (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthos) across multiple lakes and streams.
This 2010 Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) Part 2 Data Report for Ekati Diamond Mine presents comprehensive aquatic environmental monitoring results and field methodologies for the October 2009 to September 2010 period. The report documents meteorological, hydrological, physical limnological, water quality, and biological monitoring data (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic invertebrates) from lakes and streams in the Koala and King-Cujo watersheds, including three special studies on benthos mesh size, sediment sampling methods, and sediment hydrocarbons.
This technical report provides a standardized general fish-out protocol for lakes and impoundments in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, developed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to ensure consistent and scientifically rigorous removal of fish populations when development activities require lake destruction or dewatering. The protocol includes detailed methodologies for fish community assessment, biological data collection, limnological sampling, habitat inventory, and data management to maximize utility of harvested fish for local communities while gathering ecological data.
This 2008-2009 monitoring report documents the environmental response to and effects assessment of an unplanned release of approximately 4,465 m³ of processed kimberlite into Fay Bay from Cell B of the Long Lake Containment Facility in May 2008. The report presents results of land-based vegetation reclamation monitoring and comprehensive aquatic monitoring including water quality, sediment chemistry, benthic invertebrate and fish community assessments, concluding that effects were generally localized to Fay Bay with evidence of short-term impacts and successful cleanup of over 80% of the released material.
This AEMP Technical Guidance Document Volume 6 provides recommended procedures for evaluating, compiling, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting data collected under Aquatic Effects Monitoring Programs for development projects in the Northwest Territories. The document outlines data quality criteria, database management standards, analytical approaches, and communication tools for disseminating AEMP results to regulatory boards and stakeholders.
A technical guidance document providing comprehensive recommendations for designing and implementing aquatic effects monitoring programs (AEMPs) for development projects in the Northwest Territories. The document outlines five main steps: selecting appropriate monitoring program designs (control-impact, before-after, gradient, and regional reference designs), choosing sampling locations, determining effect sizes, calculating sample sizes, and establishing sampling frequencies, along with considerations for statistical analysis, reference station selection, and program evaluation.
This report describes the Pigeon Stream Fish Habitat Compensation and Monitoring Plan for the Ekati Diamond Mine, detailing how habitat lost to the proposed Pigeon Pit development will be compensated through the construction of the Pigeon Stream Diversion. The plan provides habitat budgets, final engineering designs, construction schedules, and a comprehensive post-construction monitoring program to ensure no net loss of fish habitat.
The 2006 Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) evaluated potential impacts of the Ekati Diamond Mine on aquatic ecosystems in the Koala and King-Cujo watersheds, detecting measurable effects on water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic communities attributable to discharge from the Long Lake Containment Facility and King Pond Settling Facility, though no significant environmental impacts were identified. All discharged water remained within compliance limits and below most Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment (CCME) guidelines for freshwater aquatic life protection.
This final report summarizes baseline biophysical data collected from Pigeon Stream from 1999 to 2006 to support the Pigeon Stream Fish Habitat Compensation and Monitoring Plan for the proposed Pigeon Pit development at Ekati Diamond Mine. The report documents fish populations (dominated by Arctic grayling), fish habitat characteristics, hydrology, water quality, and benthic invertebrates across seven stream reaches.
